The Tennis club have two men’s and women's teams competing in the BUCS leagues and students also have the opportunity to play in the local leagues for the Northumberland Club where they are based. The Men’s 1st team has recently been promoted to BUCS Tier 2 and the Ladies 1st Team has just been promoted to the Northern Premiership.
The club engage in intensive weekly training sessions conducted by the University’s LTA Level 5 Master Performance Coach John Henderson, also the Head of Tennis at the Northumberland Club.
Performance Sport are committed to improving the overall level of training and development over the coming years as part of a new initiative to make Newcastle University one of the country’s top centres of excellence for racquet sports.
Players are encouraged to get in touch with the club in advance of applying or to trial out at the start of the year during freshers week.
The University's Centre for Physical Recreation and Sports combines various indoor and outdoor facilities across Newcastle for our students and staff. The main centre is located on the main campus in the heart of Newcastle and is where our players access strength and conditioning, sports massage and fitness classes.
A £30 million redevelopment and extension is currently underway and due to be completed in September 2019, featuring an eight court sports hall, gym, four squash courts, Sport and Exercise Science labs, spin studio and second strength and conditioning room.
The Northumberland Club located in Jesmond is arguably the best tennis facility in the North East, with five American clay courts, nine all weather synthetic grass courts, three indoor acrylic courts and four indoor mini courts. These are all set within beautiful tree-lined grounds, overlooked by St. George's Parish Church. A full-time cafe/bar area, gym, extensive range of fitness classes and an ideal location make it the perfect base for our students.
Sunderland Tennis Centre makes up part of the Silksworth Community Pool, Tennis and Wellness Centre. Affiliated with the LTA the centre has eight indoor and ten outdoor courts with an adjoining cafe, hosting all manner of events including our BUCS matches if space is restricted at the Northumberland Club.
