Newcastle University Tennis
The Tennis club have two men’s and women's teams competing in the BUCS leagues and students also have the opportunity to play in the local leagues for the Northumberland Club where they are based. The Men’s 1st team have now joined the ladies 1st team in Tier 1 after back to back promotions through Tier 2 and 3.
The club engage in intensive weekly training sessions conducted by the University’s LTA Level 5 Master Performance Coach John Henderson, also the Head of Tennis at the Northumberland Club.
As part of the tennis team, students are able to make use of the Northumberland Club's unrivalled facilities throughout their stay at Newcastle University.
Performance Sport are committed to improving the overall level of training and development over the coming years as part of a new initiative to make Newcastle University one of the country’s top centres of excellence for racket sports.
The University's Centre for Physical Recreation and Sports combines various indoor and outdoor facilities across Newcastle for our students and staff. The main centre is located on the main campus in the heart of Newcastle and is where our players access strength and conditioning, sports massage and fitness classes.
A £30 million redevelopment is currently underway and due to be completed in September 2020. A new sport centre has already been finished featuring an eight court sports hall, gym, four squash courts, Sport and Exercise Science labs and spin studio
The Northumberland Club located in Jesmond is arguably the best tennis facility in the North East, with five American clay courts, nine all weather synthetic grass courts, three indoor acrylic courts and four indoor mini courts. These are all set within beautiful tree-lined grounds, overlooked by St. George's Parish Church. A full-time cafe/bar area, gym, extensive range of fitness classes and an ideal location make it the perfect base for our students.
Moving into a new role this season as Head Coach of the tennis teams John Henderson will be leading up both the men's and ladies sessions. With over 25 years of experience in tennis he is an LTA Level 5 Master Performance Coach and also Head of Tennis at the Northumberland Club, working with a range of ages and standards. John has a great rapport with all of our players who find his engaging and supportive coaching style a perfect fit along with his knowledge of performance tennis.
Ross Drummond is a UKSCA accredited coach, has completed a MSc in Strength & Conditioning and has over 5 years of experience. He leads the strength and conditioning program for both tennis teams on a weekly basis. Outside of the University he has worked in various roles, notably for the RFUW as North Divisional S&C coach, and in professional sport coaching Sunderland Ladies FC (Development and 1st team squads). He is currently the lead multi-sport S&C coach for the English Institute of Sport, North-East region.
The club train on Monday, Tuesday and Friday mornings (team dependant) and play BUCS fixtures on a Wednesday afternoon. Strength and conditioning is accessed during the week around academic commitments.
