Shu En Lee takes bronze medal in BUCS Individuals

Newcastle's rising star Shu En Lee makes history by becoming the first badminton player ever to take an singles medal at BUCS Individuals

Shu en has had a successful season, winning singles and doubles at both the Northumberland Gold and Silver events and helping Newcastle's ladies push their way in to the top three of the BUCS Premiership.

But nobody would have guessed a medal was possible at the yearly BUCS Individuals held in Sheffield this year. Shu en, un-seeded before the event, fought through qualification to reach the semi-finals, taking out 3/4 seed Hannah Boden along the way.

Unfortunately Shu lost out 21-16, 21-12 to no2 seed Lyddia Cheah but achieved a well earned bronze medal by beating top 4 seeded Kirby Ngan in a 3/4 playoff. Shu then went on to compete in the women's doubles event with partner Vivian Fu Vun Tan bowing out at the quarter-final stage to the no2 seeded pairing of Jess Hopton and Lizzie Tolman.

Newcastle University's badminton club have had a stellar year with all teams either topping or competing for their respective BUCS league titles and a potential first ever local league title for the ladies. Much thanks must go to the fantastic coaching team of Martin Fagan and Rich Eaton along with the well organised committee headed by president Jim Turner.
